flowers and veggies abound

the gardens are looking amazing at the house this year! my mom and dad have put a ton of effort into the flower gardens this year, and this is the first time they’ve ever mulched. we are finally working our way down in the mulch pile. by this weekend it should be gone, and all the garden areas mulched. woohoo!

the veggie plants are growing so much – i probably way over planted for my area, but that’s ok. my cukes are teeny tiny, but starting to grow a smidge. my yellow tomatoes are coming in nicely! the other tomatoes are a little slower to pop, but they were planted a bit later too, from seed. i really need to get some tomato cages – i was holding off because i don’t like the look of them, but honestly the stakes i had are no longer good for the plants. they’re too small to do any good.

how does your garden grow?

yesterday we planted our first official vegetable garden! we started the seeds a while back, and then this weekend we built a raised bed and brought some dirt over from the compost pile and transplanted them. i haven’t ever had a vegetable garden, but i have always wanted one. i got a LITTLE overzealous in my planting – i planted like 90 tomato seeds, and so now i have way too many plants than i have room. i have been giving them away left and right!

i may also try a topsy turvy tomato and strawberry grower – we’ll see!

so right now we have planted, zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant, nasturtium, cucumbers, lettuce, swiss chard, carrots, tomatoes (3 kinds of heirloom and 1 yellow cherry tomato plant), carrots, and sugar snap peas. i think that’s it.

i’m so excited about it that i want to just stand over the garden and make sure that the stuff grows. we’re expecting rain today, so i’m sure my plants will be happy!

god made dirt and dirt don’t hurt!

we started planting seeds for the veggie garden yesterday! it was over 90 degrees, can you believe it?! its crazy to have such warm weather in connecticut so early, but i’ll take it! i’m hoping that we get to go out kayaking today – it should be just as nice, i hear!

so yesterday we planted some flowers for my brother and boot’s wedding – asters, mexican sunflowers and zinnias. for veggies we planted a bunch of heirloom tomatoes and some lettuce. we will have many more veggies, but that was all we had for seeds yesterday.

in the past we have used an old bathtub in the back yard as our vegetable garden. it was good for some things, but i think that there wasn’t enough room in it for other things. so this year we are planting a vegetable garden on the side of our front yard. it gets full sun, and so much afternoon sun that its obscene. (we had to have a tree taken down this year because it was dead, this is why our yard is suddenly so bright!)
i don’t know yet how big we’ll make it, but we are thinking of 6′x4′ or so. i am trying to figure out exactly what we want to plant to figure out how much room we’ll need. next we’ll stake it off, and till it – oh the excitement!
